What We Think

Its a very attractive bird based on a French utility bird so egg numbers are good, not as high as a Ranger or and Amber but their eggs are dark brown, speckled, and said to be richer in taste. They are a larger hybrid so they mix well with the Sussex and Blues which are also slightly larger. If you are a first time buyer look more towards the smaller hybrids as they tend to be more docile, but if you are a competent keeper then you would be silly not to have a Cou Cou.

We bought 6 hybrid hens 3 months ago, the staff were very helpful during my purchase and when I called them several weeks afterwards with a question regarding a broody, they gave the same level of support and helpfulness. The hens settled in very quickly and started laying after about 5 days. 1 X Cou Cou Hen: This is by far my most favourite hen, an absolute winner! I really love this hen! Very easy going but always busy, gorgeous, and this hen lays every single day without a fail, lovely large dark brown eggs. I certainly would recommend this hen to anyone, she lays 7 days a week, amazing! 2 X Columbian Black Tail Hens: These two are very friendly, always come straight to the gate as soon as they see you. They lay nice large brown eggs. We did have a broody one, but she snapped out of it after 30 days and is now doing very well. 1 X Pied Hen: A lovely strong heavy hen, no problems at all, very easy going, lays very well, the eggs are nice and big, she is really gorgeous, love her plumage markings. 1 X Sussex Hen: Very similar to the pied hen, but this hen makes me laugh though, she stamps her feet like a little child before she crouches down when you come near her. very easy going and lays very well. 1 X Blue Hybrid Hen: My goodness, this is a must have if you are after a hen with a big personality. We call her Bossy Blue Boots. She has such a personality, I would give her Ten out of Ten for entertainment, she is so funny in her ways. She does think she is the boss but is friendly with the other hens and humans alike. A real beauty! Her eggs are a little bit on the small side and not as much as the other ones, but she has character that stands out! All the hens were in top condition, no mites, no worms, and no parasites of any kind. They were very healthy, lovely plumage, perfect beaks, perfect feet, absolutely no problems at all, really healthy good quality chickens! All the hens are so easy to handle, they seem to be used to being handled and picked up by humans which is great. I certainly would shop here again! The hens are doing really well. Review from a very happy customer with happy healthy hens!

We bought 4 hens a week ago and we're very pleased. A mixed batch and without doubt the Cou Cou is the most friendly and a real character. Drinks water out of the watering can before I can pour it into the water canister and squats to be picked up as soon as I go in with treats! Initially the Sussex was the bossiest, but they've all settled down now and the Cou Cou is in charge. Just waiting for them all to come into lay. We've only had one egg so far, but they are still quite young so another week or two should see some eggs. Will be six stars when they all start to lay. Very happy to recommend the Poultry Centre at Bell Plantation.

This review is for a similar product: Amber Star Hen

Amber Star Hen We bought a selection of 3 breeds of hen for our first time and the Amber Star is by far the most sociable - Very friendly and happy to be picked up. She also lays pretty much every day, can\'t remember the last time we went a day without an egg from her All the birds we bought from here were healthy and have been a joy to have, even with their diverse personalities!
